Protecting What You've

Worked For

Your home, your savings, your retirement accounts, a business you built. You've worked hard for these, and you want them to go to your family.

If you're worried about lawsuits, creditors, or taxes reducing what your family receives, I can help you understand your options and choose the ones that actually fit your life. Not every family needs advanced planning. If you don't, I'll tell you.

Asset Protection Planning

Asset protection is about lowering your exposure to risks like lawsuits and creditors, while keeping the access and flexibility you need to live your life. Depending on your situation, that can include:

• Trusts designed to protect what you leave to your children or other beneficiaries from their creditors, lawsuits or divorce

• Reviewing how your property is owned and titled

• For business owners, keeping personal and business assets properly separated

• In some cases, irrevocable trusts that offer stronger protection in exchange for giving up some control

Good asset protection is planned in advance. It can't be put in place after a claim has already come up.

Estate Tax Planning

For 2026, the federal estate tax exemption is $15 million per person, or $30 million for a married couple, and it is adjusted for inflation going forward. North Carolina has no state estate or inheritance tax. That means most families will not owe estate tax.

For families with larger estates, planning can significantly reduce what's owed. Options include:

• Making sure married couples preserve both spouses' exemptions

• Lifetime gifting strategies

• Irrevocable trusts and other advanced tools, where they make sense

Even if estate tax isn't a concern for you, income tax still matters. How your assets pass to your family can affect the taxes they pay later, and I take that into account.
